Suffer Well

Series: Mother's Day 2023 | Week 1: Mother's Day 2023

This week in Daily Bible Reading, we’re reading some of our Mother’s Day guest’s favorite verses, centered around the themes she shared with us on Sunday. If you missed her conversation with Aaron Brockett, check it out here.

Read 2 Corinthians 12:7-10 in your personal Bible or at the link provided.

Review
1. What caused Paul to suffer?
2. What did God say about Paul’s weakness?
3. How did that change Paul’s view of suffering?

Reflect
Today’s verses lay a foundation for how to suffer well. Despite Paul’s prayers for his “thorn” to be removed, God said no. Not to torture Paul, but so that God’s power could be on display through him. God wasn’t looking for Paul’s strength, bravery, or natural abilities. He wanted Paul to rely on Him.

This is what He calls us to as well. God gives us strengths and weaknesses, but His power works best in weakness. This means our weaknesses are assets, not liabilities. God uses them to showcase His remarkable power to a watching world. Every trial we go through is an opportunity to respond with faith, to point people to the hope we have in Jesus. Persevering faith leaves its mark on those around us.

Is there a painful situation you’re walking through right now? How is God using it to refine you? Let it strengthen your belief that God is who He says He is. Let it bring you to your knees in profound worship, a deeper relationship with God, and complete dependence on Him. If you’re not facing a hard situation, how can you encourage someone who is?

Respond
Based on today’s reading, what do you think God is prompting you to do in response? Write it down, share it with a friend, and take a step to start making it happen.
