Respond
Today’s passage depicts a moment when Jesus could have lost control over Himself and His purpose. He was tempted with three alluring offers: instant gratification, identity, and power. While Satan used every means to tempt Jesus, even quoting and manipulating Scripture, Jesus stood firm. With the Word of God, He pushed Satan back and displayed self-control.

In our own lives, there are many conditions, tactics, and lures that make us easy prey for the enemy. No matter what, we can follow Jesus’ example and bear the fruit of self-control. How do we do that? By knowing and applying the Word of God. Not just at a surface level, but knowing it well enough to recognize when it’s being manipulated to lead us astray.

How well do you know God’s Word? Do you spend time meditating on it? Not only absorbing it, but also living out what it says? Take a few minutes now to confess where you’ve struggled. Ask God to help you recognize when temptation comes and to display self-control as you get to know Him more deeply through His Word.
