1. What are we told to remain faithful to, and what are we told to remain in?
2. In our fellowship with the Son and the Father, what do we enjoy?
3. Who teaches us what we need to know?
Reflect
Yesterday we read about the existence of those who deny Christ, or “antichrists.” Today’s passage builds on it by providing a clear response. In the midst of this world, we’re told to remain faithful and to remain in fellowship.
The original Greek for “remain” can also be interpreted as “live, abide, or be at home in.” In the face of pressure and false teaching, John urged believers to make their home in God’s presence. This meant continually reminding themselves of the truth they’d learned from the beginning. It also meant a willingness to listen to the Holy Spirit. To abide in His voice and listen to His guidance.
As we navigate this world, we’re not told to viciously attack or to hide in fear. We’re told to remain. God has given us everything we need to live in confidence and truth. He’s given us His Word, He’s given us community with other believers, and He’s given us His Spirit to lead us wherever we go. Let’s live in the truth and remain in the light.
Respond
• What is typically your default response in the face of pressure? How does today’s reading challenge you in that area?
• How does the idea of making your home in God’s presence hit you? Do you find it easy or hard to live this way?
• Do you see a need to grow in one of the following: (1) remaining in God’s Word, (2) remaining in community with other believers, or (3) remaining aware of God’s Spirit with you at all times? What could you do to grow in these areas?
Pray through these questions, and write down what God is prompting you to do next. Share with a friend, and take a step to apply it.
