The book of Lamentations is themed around restored relationship with God, and today’s verses are often considered the pinnacle of that theme. The author recognizes his low position in light of who God is. He’s a man in need of mercy; God’s mercies are new every morning. He’s a man searching and waiting; God’s goodness and faithfulness give reason to hope. He’s a man dependent; God’s salvation can be fully depended on.

What an incredible picture for us today. When we approach God, we can be confident that He is a merciful, good, faithful rescuer. He wants nothing more than to be restored in relationship with us, and each morning is a new opportunity to walk with Him.

How do today’s verses expand on or reaffirm your understanding of who God is? When is the last time you thanked Him for His mercy, goodness, faithfulness, and salvation? Take some time to do that now. Praise Him for who He is, and thank Him for desiring relationship with you. Ask Him to help you wake up every morning with new awareness of His mercies.

Want to go deeper? The well-known hymn, “Great Is Thy Faithfulness,” was largely inspired by today’s verses. Spend some time in personal worship by watching this rendition of the song. To learn more about the writing and history of the hymn, visit this link.
