God Created: Light and Sky

Series: Jesus Is | Week 5: Jesus Is The Hope of New Life

In preparation for our new message series, Significant Other, we’re studying Genesis 1 this week in Daily Bible Reading.

Read Genesis 1:1-8

Discover
1. What words are used to describe the earth before creation?
2. What did God create on the first and second days? How did He create them?
3. What separations were created as a result of what He called into existence (verses 4 and 7)?

Respond
Before the creation of the world, the earth was formless and empty—a desolate wasteland. And then God spoke. His voice brought forth light and sky—two key elements for the protection and survival of life on earth. God is the dividing line between darkness and light. He created the sky as a dividing line between the waters above and the waters below. Everything He created is a display of His power, wisdom, and understanding.

Isaiah 45:18 says, “For the Lord is God, and he created the heavens and earth and put everything in place. He made the world to be lived in, not to be a place of empty chaos. ‘I am the Lord,’ he says, ‘and there is no other.’” Spend a few minutes now reflecting on this verse. Thank God for the order He brings to chaos—both in creation and in your own life. Surrender any areas where you’re struggling to trust Him, and ask Him to fill you with a greater awareness of His presence and His plan.
