The God Who Quiets Raging Seas

Series: For All the People | Week 1: The Fearful

Day Five Psalms 65:5-8 and 89:5-9

5 You faithfully answer our prayers with awesome deeds,
O God our savior.
You are the hope of everyone on earth,
even those who sail on distant seas.
6 You formed the mountains by your power
and armed yourself with mighty strength.
7 You quieted the raging oceans
with their pounding waves
and silenced the shouting of the nations.
8 Those who live at the ends of the earth
stand in awe of your wonders.
From where the sun rises to where it sets,
you inspire shouts of joy.
– Psalm 65:5-8 (NLT)

5 All heaven will praise your great wonders, Lord;
myriads of angels will praise you for your faithfulness.
6 For who in all of heaven can compare with the Lord?
What mightiest angel is anything like the Lord?
7 The highest angelic powers stand in awe of God.
He is far more awesome than all who surround his throne.
8 O Lord God of Heaven’s Armies!
Where is there anyone as mighty as you, O Lord?
You are entirely faithful.

9 You rule the oceans.
You subdue their storm-tossed waves.
– Psalm 89:5-9 (NLT)

Respond
Take some time today or this weekend to reread all the passages from this week’s Daily Bible Readings collectively. Ask the Author of Scripture to inspire awe of Him within you as you see them all fitting together, telling one unified story of a God who so loves you that He went to great lengths to rescue you. In Him we find a peace that passes all understanding. Use the words of a favorite hymn or worship song to respond in worship.

For Families with Kids at Home:
We see over and over again in Scripture how powerful God is - how He calms storms and forms mountains. Whether it’s mountains and storms, or it’s the storms in our life that scare or intimidate us, God has power even when we feel powerless! God controls what is outside of our control.

Ask your kids if they’ve ever experienced a time when things were scary or felt out of control. Point out the power that God has, and that the same God who has the power to calm storms loves them and watches over them! So they next time they encounter storms or things that might overwhelm them, they can turn to the God who’s stronger than the storms!
