Reflect
David likely composed this psalm around the time when he brought the Ark of the Covenant into Jerusalem, celebrating the return of God’s presence among His people. As David called on the Israelites to praise God, he described Him as the Father to the fatherless, the one who sets captives free and brings joy and community.
God shows us great mercy, for Scripture tells us that we’ve all rebelled against Him (Romans 3:23). In our sin, we don’t deserve to dwell in His presence, but God sent Jesus because He wants us to be with Him. He wants us to know Him as our heavenly Father, as our defender, and as our rescuer. And when we know Him, we get to share His good news with others, too.
You don’t have to look too hard to find people who need hope. David acknowledged the wickedness that exists in the world and preys on the vulnerable and defenseless. But God is always stronger than evil. He has won the ultimate victory through Jesus’ death and resurrection, and you can play a part in bringing His Kingdom to earth while awaiting His return.
