Day Two John 4:6-106 Jacob’s well was there; and Jesus, tired from the long walk, sat wearily beside the well about noontime. 7 Soon a Samaritan woman came to draw water, and Jesus said to her, “Please give me a drink.” 8 He was alone at the time because his disciples had gone into the village to buy some food.9 The woman was surprised, for Jews refuse to have anything to do with Samaritans. She said to Jesus, “You are a Jew, and I am a Samaritan woman. Why are you asking me for a drink?”10 Jesus replied, “If you only knew the gift God has for you and who you are speaking to, you would ask me, and I would give you living water.” – John 4:6-10 (NLT)Discover1. What human, physical needs does Jesus have according to verses 6-7?2. What cultural boundaries is Jesus crossing (verse 9)?3. How does Jesus try to create spiritual curiosity in the Samaritan woman?RespondWhile Jesus crosses several cultural boundaries by talking to a Samaritan woman alone, the most provocative statement He makes here is found in verse 10. Jesus offers this thirsty woman living water, calling it a gift God has specifically for her. Several times in the Old Testament, we see the metaphor of living water used for God Himself and of a coming salvation the Jews would have looked forward to. By offering her living water, Jesus is offering the woman the gift of spiritual cleansing, salvation that is found in Him, the fulfillment of those prophecies! Ask God now to show you the ways you may be trying to quench your thirst with things that won’t satisfy it. Ask for His help in guiding you to Living Water. For Further Reading: What We Need More Than AnythingFor Families with Kids at HomeAs parents, our kids are often concerned about whatever we are concerned about. So if we’re looking to money to quench our thirst and be our security, our kids will too. If we’re looking to improve our status or reputation, our kids will as well. Ask God to examine your heart in what you’re thirsting for, and ask Him to help show your kids that the only thing that can satisfy their spiritual thirst is God’s love!*TPCC does not necessarily endorse all For Further Reading/Learning sources.
