Your Next Step in Following Jesus

If you’ve decided to follow Jesus, your next step is baptism. Baptism is the first act of obedience for every believer. It’s a simple, tangible way to express what God has already done in your heart. Maybe you feel like you do not know enough yet, you want to grow more first, or you have things in your life you’re still working through. That’s okay! Baptism is not the finish line. It is the starting line.

In Scripture, people were baptized as the very next step after placing their faith in Jesus (Romans 6:1-4, Acts 2:14-41, Acts 8:26-39). The same is true for us today.

Baptism FAQ

Baptism is an exciting step in following Jesus, and we know it can bring up a lot of questions. We’ve put together answers to the ones we hear most often to help guide you.

The Bible teaches that we are saved by grace through faith. One way we can outwardly express our faith is through baptism. Baptism is a public confession of putting one’s trust and hope in Jesus, and it’s for everyone who has put his or her faith in Christ. At Traders Point, we believe baptism is an outward expression of that internal transformation, and it’s one of the first steps we take when we start following Jesus. We practice baptism by immersion. Jesus modeled this form of baptism and commanded it, making baptism a symbolic act of obedience and faith. In the New Testament, the Greek word for baptism is “baptizo,” which means to plunge, dip, or immerse. Baptism by immersion represents the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus, symbolizing our old self dying and our new self being raised as a new creation in Jesus.

Some people feel like they need to know more, grow more, or fix things in their life first. But baptism is not how we finish our faith journey; it’s how we start it. You don’t have to have everything figured out. You just have to be willing to take your next step.

If you were baptized but didn’t fully understand what it meant, or it wasn’t connected to your personal decision to follow Jesus, it may be your next step now.

Baptism is meant to follow your own faith in Jesus. If you’ve come to understand the gospel more fully since your first baptism, choosing to be baptized again is a genuine expression of that faith.

As a parent, you play the most important role in helping your child take this step.

A child does not need to understand everything about faith, but they should have a basic understanding of who Jesus is, their need for Him, and a personal desire to follow Him.

Often, a good indicator is when your child begins asking about baptism and can explain in their own words why they want to take that step.

We celebrate baptisms on the first full weekend of each month—when Saturday and Sunday fall within that weekend. During these gatherings, baptisms take place during worship across all locations.
