During His time on earth, Jesus taught on the subject of money more than any other. In today’s verses, He hits at the heart of our treasure. Whatever we put our trust in by definition becomes a god.

Money often becomes God’s chief competition in our hearts – a functional savior – but it can never provide for us, give us comfort, security, or identity like God can. Money isn’t bad in itself; it’s what we do with it that’s so critical to the condition of our hearts. Our hearts always follow our treasure, and money is a great servant but a horrible master. That’s why we need to lead it so it doesn’t lead us.

Have you allowed money to become your master lately? Where have you put money or possessions in a place of power in your life over God? Confess it to Him now. Thank Him for being the only source of lasting comfort, security, and identity, and commit to letting Him lead you as you put money in its proper place in your heart.
