In his letter to the Philippian church, Paul urged them to live as citizens of heaven in a manner worthy of the gospel. The first way he said they could do this was through unity – standing together in one Spirit and one purpose. This is something Jesus prayed for and sacrificed for – to make the church unified as one. Paul called his readers to live with this as their hope and joy.

One of the biggest things that keeps people from the church and from Jesus today is disunity. It’s easy for us to get focused on secondary things and start fighting each other. But to live worthy of the gospel means standing shoulder to shoulder with our fellow Christ followers. We’re citizens of the same Kingdom. We shouldn’t fight against each other. We should fight with each other in spiritual solidarity against the enemy of our souls.

Stand in unity. Is there someone you’ve specifically struggled to stand shoulder to shoulder with in unity, whether it’s an individual you know or a collective group you struggle to see as fellow citizens? Spend some time in prayer, asking God to show you a step you can take toward unity.
