1. What was God’s solution to the problem of man being alone?
2. What was man’s reaction once the woman was created?
3. How do these verses point to God’s design for marriage?

Reflect
Today’s verses show us the origin of God’s design for marriage. He had created everything in the earth, including man, and it was good. But God said it wasn’t good for man to be alone. He needed a companion and helper. When God created the woman, she was a match to what the man was missing. Everything he wasn’t would be found in her. Everything she wasn’t, he was.

This is God’s original design for marriage, and it still applies today. God created marriage to be between one man and one woman who are equal but distinct, who join and complement each other. And in their fullness together, they can better reflect the image of God. Marriage isn’t a piece of paper, expensive ceremony, or tax benefit. It’s a gift from God.

When we remember the start of God’s plans for marriage, it shifts our perspective. Marriage isn’t on us. It’s not our idea or concept. If we reduce it to that, we’ll turn it into something it wasn’t meant to be. Marriage is God’s design. Whatever our relationship status, let’s honor Him in how we approach it.
