Our Next Guest Is: The Storm.

Series: Our Next Guest | Week 3: A Journey Through the Gospel of Mark

Day Five Mark 4:35-41

35 As evening came, Jesus said to his disciples, “Let’s cross to the other side of the lake.” 36 So they took Jesus in the boat and started out, leaving the crowds behind (although other boats followed). 37 But soon a fierce storm came up. High waves were breaking into the boat, and it began to fill with water.

38 Jesus was sleeping at the back of the boat with his head on a cushion. The disciples woke him up, shouting, “Teacher, don’t you care that we’re going to drown?”

39 When Jesus woke up, he rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Silence! Be still!” Suddenly the wind stopped, and there was a great calm. 40 Then he asked them, “Why are you afraid? Do you still have no faith?”

41 The disciples were absolutely terrified. “Who is this man?” they asked each other. “Even the wind and waves obey him!”
– Mark 4:35-41 (NLT)

1. How do we see Jesus as 100% human and 100% God in verses 38-39?
2. With what kind of statement do the disciples awaken Jesus?
3. What new picture of Jesus do the disciples receive in this story?

In their humanity, the disciples cried out to Jesus to save them from drowning. Instead, they got a picture of the deity of Jesus to the point that it terrified them. The message of cultural Christianity will tell us to continue seeking God for what we can get from Him, rather than seeking more of Him. No matter how long we've been following Jesus, there is always more to learn about Him. Spend some time now confessing ways you may have bought into the lie of cultural Christianity. Ask God for more of Him and praise Him for who He is.
