Life and Light

Series: Christmas with Traders Point | Week 1: God Became Flesh

During the month of December, Daily Bible Reading will focus on the story and circumstances surrounding Jesus’ birth. We hope this time leads you to fresh awe of who Jesus is and why He came to earth.

Read John 1:1-5

1 In the beginning the Word already existed.
The Word was with God,
and the Word was God.
2 He existed in the beginning with God.
3 God created everything through him,
and nothing was created except through him.
4 The Word gave life to everything that was created,
and his life brought light to everyone.
5 The light shines in the darkness,
and the darkness can never extinguish it. (NLT)

Before diving into the Christmas story, it’s helpful to see the breadth of who Jesus was and is. In John 1, Jesus is referred to as the Word. And as we see in today’s passage, Jesus is one with God and is God. He gave life through creation, and then He brought Himself low. He came to earth fully human and fully God, all so we could have life and light.

When we look at the world around us, it can be easy to forget Jesus. We might spend our holidays in survival mode or trying to keep up with the person who “has it all together.” But if we do that, we miss the life and light that Jesus came to bring.

What do you tend to focus on during the Christmas season? How does the truth of who Jesus is shift your perspective? Spend some time reflecting on today’s verses, and praise God for the sacrifice Jesus made to bring you life and light. Ask Him to open your eyes to see Him more clearly.
