Be on your guard.

Luke 12:13-15
Someone in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me.” Jesus replied, “Man, who appointed me a judge or an arbiter between you?” Then he said to them, “Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions.”

Jewish rabbis would often serve as mediators of civil disputes and so this man drags Jesus into his family argument. While it may seem like the man wants his share, the greater issue is the greed that is in his life and is obvious to Jesus.

Jesus tells the crowd to avoid pursuing having a surplus of possessions because that is not what life is about. It is easy to waste your life pursuing temporary possessions when you could spend it pursuing an eternity in heaven and a rich relationship with God.

What are some possessions in your life you are pursuing? Ask God to refocus your heart on Him and the important things in life–not the temporary things that come with the sin in our hearts.
