A merciful and just God.

Colossians 3:5-7

So put to death the sinful, earthly things lurking within you. Have nothing to do with sexual immorality, impurity, lust, and evil desires. Don’t be greedy, for a greedy person is an idolater, worshiping the things of this world. Because of these sins, the anger of God is coming. You used to do these things when your life was still part of this world.

The word ‘so’ at the beginning of these verses points back to the first four verses of Colossians 3 and the reality of our new life in Christ. Our lives should reflect this new life. We have the ability and power to put to death things from our old nature—sins that separate us from a holy God. God is merciful and just, as sin does not go unpunished. Jesus went to the cross for those sins.

'Put to death' is strong wording. Take a minute to examine where sin may still be lurking in your life. Don’t take it lightly. Confess it, thank God that He forgives sin through Jesus, and ask Him for His strength in putting that sin to death.
