Reflect
This Psalm was written by David, a lowly shepherd whom God called to be king of Israel. Scripture describes him as “a man after God’s own heart.” At this point in David’s life, he was certain God heard him when he cried out. He used these verses and the rest of Psalm 34 to reflect on how close God was to His faithful people when they faced trials, pain, and suffering.
God hears our prayers. He knows what we need and sees us when we’re struggling. He is close to us in our physical, mental, emotional and spiritual pain. We have a God who sees and hears us and can step in to help us when we’re in need.
Jesus says there will be trouble in this world (John 16:33). But He understands your struggles (Hebrews 4:15) and wants to carry your heavy burdens (Matthew 11:18-30). Most of the time, it’s in the midst of suffering that you can most deeply experience the nearness and comfort of God. Is there something you haven’t taken to God because you’re not sure if He cares or even hears you? Or maybe you have taken your pain to Him, but you feel like you’re in the middle of waiting? Even if it’s hard to see, God’s been faithful in your life. Ask Him to help you trust that He is always working and moving, even when you don’t see it.
