***This opportunity is a DIY project that can be done at a time convenient for your group. It needs to be completed OUTSIDE of your normal Rooted group time, during the dates of May 20th - June 5th. Your Rooted Group Facilitator will need to register with Wheeler to drop the lunches off on a specific date (see Step 4 below).***
This is a family-friendly service opportunity.
Wheeler Mission Ministries helps the homeless in Indiana. Founded in 1893, Wheeler is a non-denominational, Christian, social services organization, which provides critically needed goods and services to the homeless, poor, and needy of central Indiana.
We need YOUR help to make sure sack lunches are supplied for our guests. Sack lunches typically supplement our hot meals and are a huge help for our Kitchen Staff! We ask that you provide 175 sack lunches.
Step 1: As a group, spend time learning about Wheeler Mission and those they serve. Their website, wheelermission.org, is a good starting place.
Step 2: Pick a time to build the sack lunches, and make a plan to collect funds and purchase the items. What goes in the Sack Lunch? Lunches should include:
- a sandwich (PB+J, lunchmeat, etc.),
- apple or orange,
- chips or cookies,
- granola bar, fruit snack or candy, and
- a drink (water/Gatorade, etc.)
- We DO have ability to refrigerate so things like string cheese would be great, too. Please prepare in a brown lunch sack.
We thank you for supplying the ingredients that go into each lunch! We ask that you follow proper food safety guidelines, including:
- NOT signing up for this opportunity if you aren't feeling well, have been exposed to COVID-19 or other infections, are currently under quarantine measures, etc.
- Using pre-packaged food items when possible,
- Wearing gloves while preparing the food, and
- Ensuring your workstation(s) are sanitized
Step 3: Gather together to build the sack lunches, and to pray over the bags. This is a great opportunity to involve your kids, as they can decorate the bags!
Step 4: Have someone from your group register on the Wheeler website for a specific day to drop off the lunches here. You can click "Respond Individually." You'll sign up for a shift that's from 9am-10am, but that's just a placeholder! You can bring them any time between 9am-5pm to the Shelter for Women and Children @ 3208 E. Michigan St. Indianapolis, IN 46201. Proceed to the alley behind the building and knock on the door closest to Dearborn St. If no one answers, call the office at 317-687-3630 and let them know you're there.
