Review

1. Why did Jesus tell His disciples not to fear?

2. What does God know about sparrows?

3. What does He know about us?

Reflect

In this conversation, Jesus prepared to send His disciples to teach the Israelites about God’s Kingdom. He warned them they’d encounter trials, opposition, and hatred from others simply because they followed Him. Even Jesus Himself endured hatred and accusations from the very people He came to save. But He said His disciples didn’t have to be afraid. Why?

Fear is a natural emotion God gave us that can help protect us from danger. When Scripture tells us not to fear, it isn’t saying that we’ll never feel afraid again, or that we’ve failed when we get worried. Rather, Jesus wants us to know we’re never alone when we have these feelings. When we put our trust in Him, we have nothing eternal to fear – our souls are secure in His powerful hands.

God is closer to you now than you can imagine. He knows you more intimately than anyone else can. And above all, He loves you and cares for you. He sent His Son to die for you. He sees you now, and He never misses anything you go through. You’re safe with Him.

Respond

How do you react to hearing Jesus say not to be afraid? What do you believe God thinks about you, and how is today’s reading similar or different? How does knowing God’s character encourage you? Spend some time in prayer thanking God for how He sees you and cares for you.
