Review

1. How many times did Elijah’s servant look for rain?

2. What did Jezebel say she would do?

3. Why did Elijah feel defeated?

Reflect

Elijah had many reasons to celebrate: he participated in God’s demonstration of His power, Israel renewed their devotion to Him, God defeated the false prophets, and rain finally came to end the three-year drought. But instead of triumphant, Elijah felt afraid and defeated. God used him in miraculous ways, and it left him burned out.

No one is immune to the effects of prolonged stress, even when the stress comes from following God. We might feel especially worn-down at the end of a season of doing or experiencing good things for His kingdom, and that doesn’t mean we’ve done something wrong. It may just be a warning sign that we need to slow down and allow Him to restore us.

If you find yourself relating to Elijah, remember that this isn’t where his story ends. God will meet you in your time of need, and He desires to help you – He sent Jesus for you! You can be honest with Him about everything. Whether you feel victorious or defeated, or anything in between, He wants to hear it from you.

Respond

Do you find it easy or difficult to bring your honest feelings to God, and why? How does Elijah’s example of being honest before God encourage you that you can do the same? Spend some time in prayer thanking God for His love for you and for His desire to always help you.
